Welcome to Sweetly Fit, the story of a future-RD college girl striving for balance between being healthful and treating her sweet tooth!
My name is Kristi and I am passionate about living a healthy life. Several years ago, I vowed to change my unhealthy habits and get serious about being healthy. I have always loved to eat. While I ate many fruits and vegetables, many other not so healthful items went into my mouth as well. Over time, I started noticing that all my snacking was starting to take a toll on my body. I didn’t feel good mentally or physically and my confidence dwindled because of it. One day, I finally got fed up with it and decided to start my journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
Since then, exercise has become a huge part of my life.
I found a passion for running and have completed several small races around my town. I enjoyed every second of it!
I caught the “race fever” and immediately signed up for more races.
I felt on top of the world each time I set foot on the pavement. Running gave me an outlet to get out all of my aggression, stress, and fear. It allowed me to clear my head and just be.
But running wasn’t the only thing I came to love…
Yoga also found it’s way into my life…and I couldn’t be happier that it did! Again, yoga has been a wonderful stress reliever, only in a whole different way than running. There is so much variety in yoga. I can completely relax my body and mind with it, or I can get an awesome, booty-kicking workout. It is so versatile, but whatever routine I end up choosing, I can be assured that I will come out feeling refreshed and revived.
I was having fun with running and yoga, but at the same time I still wanted to expand my exercise horizons. I have more recently become a huge fan of strength training and lifting weights.
I used to be intimidated by all the meatheads at my gym, lifting and grunting away. I wanted to be in there, but didn’t even know where to start. I started reading online about lifting weights and gained some knowledge of some basic moves and routines that I could do. One day I was feel extra brave and decided to just go for it at the gym. And you know what? I LOVED IT! And no one cared that I was in there or judged me. Why had I been so afraid all this time?! Now I look forward to getting in the weight room and duking it out with the big guys. Lifting has done so much for my body and really changed the way I looked. No more “skinny fat.” Now I’m a lean, mean, fighting machine!
I have also found a love for nutrition, baking, and cooking. I believe that balance is the way to go. I learned the hard way that striving to be perfect only ends up backfiring. The key is to practice moderation and be kind to your body.
I have transitioned my eating to be as whole and natural as possible. Again, for me, it’s all about the balance. I focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
I try to start off all of my days with a big healthy breakfast:
Sometimes it’s green and scares people. I promise it tastes amazing.
I like to get creative in the kitchen:
I adore sushi…
and have a slight obsession with nut butters.
I eat quite a few veggies…
but most of all, I live for the dessert.
healthified, of course!
I cannot tell you how much more alive I feel now that I am treating my body that way it wants to be treated! It no longer is “work” to eat healthy and exercise…I look forward to it. If you are on a mission to become healthier, my main advice is to just stick with it. It WILL get easier! Getting healthy was the best decision I ever made.
Now I’m faced with the challenges of living a healthy lifestyle in a not-always-so-healthy situation: COLLEGE. I have moved away from home and started a new chapter in my life while striving to achieve my long-time goal of becoming a registered dietitian. Come join me for the ride as I make my way through the trials, tribulations, learning experiences, and most importantly, FUN, of life in college.
It’s nice to meet you.
